Understanding Acetylcholinesterase
What is Acetylcholinesterase?
Acetylcholinesterase is a blood test that measures the levels of two chemicals that assist the nervous system to function properly. If a patient has been exposed to substances known as organophosphates, a healthcare professional may prescribe this test. This test can help establish if a patient has been poisoned or exposed to specific organophosphate chemicals present in pesticides, as well as evaluate cholinesterase concentrations if they work with pesticide residues. Blood is obtained from a vein on the inside of the elbow or on the back of the hand to carry out the test. Suppression of AChE causes a number of symptoms including dizziness, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, or even death.
