Shanchol

Shanchol Oral Vaccine is usually given orally (by mouth) as a single dose. This vaccine comes in a powdered form which is first mixed with water before taking it. Shanchol Oral Vaccine will be given only in a hospital setting or under a similar setting such as a clinic by a doctor. This vaccine should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 1 hour after eating.

The effect of Shanchol Oral Vaccine starts appearing after about 1 week of taking it. Booster doses are recommended after 2 years for adults, children of age 6 years or more, and every 6 months for children of age 2–5 years. The vaccine should not be given to children under 2 years of age.

Severe cholera, if left untreated, kills about half of affected individuals. Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease that can kill within hours if proper treatment is not given. If the severe diarrhea is not treated, it can result in life-threatening dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

Vaccine for cholera is available, but most people don't need it. It is usually only recommended if you are travelling to an area where there are active cases of cholera. The vaccine can also be suggested if you need to visit remote places where access to medical care is not easily available.

Shanchol Oral Vaccine is very effective in preventing severe diarrhea (watery poop) and frequent vomiting caused by cholera. Cholera symptoms can lead to dehydration (state of not having enough water in the body), kidney failure or even coma if not treated right away.
