Oral Polio Vaccine
Prescription Required
Product introduction
Oral Polio Vaccine is used in the prevention of polio. It protects against poliomyelitis causing poliovirus. Polio or poliomyelitis is a crippling and potentially deadly infectious disease. The virus spreads from person to person and can invade an infected person's brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis.
The first dose of Oral Polio Vaccine is given at birth. Primary three doses of this vaccine are given at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of child's age. This is followed by two booster doses, one at 16-24 months of age and others at five years of age.
In addition to these, do not forget to immunize your child during all pulse polio immunization days. The vaccine is administered multiple times to ensure full protection. There is no risk of overdose and very minimal risk of adverse effects. However, some children may experience vomiting, fever, and diarrhea. Let your child's doctor know if your child experiences any such symptoms.

Polio is a crippling and potentially deadly infectious disease. Poliovirus spreads from person to person and can invade an infected person's brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis. Oral Polio Vaccine protects against poliomyelitis causing poliovirus. The vaccine contains inactivated (killed) viruses of all three poliovirus types (I, II, and III). FAQs
What is Oral Polio Vaccine used for?
Oral Polio Vaccine contains live attenuated poliovirus (strain types 1, 2 and 3) and is intended for polio prophylaxis in infants 6-12 weeks of age, all unimmunized children up to 18 years of age and high-risk adults. Adults, however, should receive the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV).
What are the different types of polio vaccines?
Polio vaccines are vaccines used to prevent poliomyelitis (polio). There are two types of polio vaccines, one is inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) which is given by injection and the other is weakened oral poliovirus vaccine(OPV) given by mouth.
Is Oral Polio Vaccine necessary?
Yes, polio virus attacks the nervous system which can lead to paralysis, especially of lower limbs. Therefore, it is important to get Oral Polio Vaccine as it provides protection against this virus.
Is Oral Polio Vaccine better than inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV)?
No, IPV is considered more effective than Oral Polio Vaccine. Although, it is expensive and relatively difficult to administer. It was seen that giving Oral Polio Vaccine alone led to more cases of polio when compared to Oral Polio Vaccine because it is a live form of the virus. Therefore, in order to prevent polio outbreaks, Oral Polio Vaccine is the preferred form of polio vaccine.
